Time to Unfurl

Step outside with me. Let’s look at the trees, the grass. The Spring Equinox is upon us. Green is bursting forth. I feel like I’m watching a black and white television slowly turn to color. Oh, the wonder of it all: each leaf unfurling from a tube to a wide, open heart, ready to take in the sun and make something new, how they don’t unroll desperately. Even after winter, the tress are not reaching with desperation for the sun. Again, it allows each leaf to sprout slowly, emerging in it’s own time, though each flat gem is vital to the tree’s nutrition system, it’s success in life. Without urgency, the sun and leaves embrace, welcoming each other to a new season of growth, hope, opportunity.
Remember in January, when we talked about resolutions and goals? The pressure we put on ourselves to perform in the dark months, before the sun has returned to us. All urgency and dramatic change, only to be swept back into our comforters when our ambition couldn’t melt the chill of Winter, still firmly in place. Now, now is our time. It’s time to step outside and let the sun shine on your face. This is where hope springs eternal, where we find our hearts warmed, lifted, ready to meet the sun in their own way, vital to our success in life. It’s time for a New Year’s Resolution. Except, can we really call it that? Does it count as a new year when we are nearly a fourth of the way through. Wow, a fourth and yet it really has only just begun. A Fourth of the Year’s Resolution, maybe? We might have to workshop that.
The Spring Solstice is a time of growth and rebirth. This is something that is wired into our very biology. Every natural piece in your and me knows that the sun is coming. Things are changing, including the people of this ecosystem. We are, as I have said before, truly nature ourselves. What can you do to honor Spring as a piece of the world that nurtures you? What does it mean to spread your love in a way that showcases the beauty that you belong to? I think I could start with slowly letting my leaves unfurl. What will each new piece of me look like in this season? How will it be critical to my success?
The interesting thing about comparing myself to trees is finding the acceptance the changes will come. One million tiny little things will alter within myself with the return of the sun. Each one will be reaching for towards the rays of light that grow stronger each day. Every day will bring me more light to strengthen my hopes, my dreams, my goals. It’s time to revisit what those things are and decide what I want to use the new resources for. What will my proverbial leaves be soaking up the sun to power within me? What will your proverbial leaves be soaking up the sun to power in you? A Fourth of the Year’s Resolution is calling us to adventure. We agreed to leave the new year behind, to retreat into the warmth of our blankets and allow ourselves to continue to rest. Now, I implore you to join in me in finding a new goal. Something as simple as a walk each week or something as bold as soldering pieces of glass together to catch the rays of light that will grace us for some time. There is a song in your soul, listen to its tune, find the words, follow it into revolve.
Emerge from your blankets, strip off your wool socks. The sun is calling you.
